Our second road run of the year was a very scenic but partially obscured trip through the Angus Glens which was brilliantly organised by Roger and Margaret Key. A date change due to other commitments meant that we weren’t able to give members as much notice as normal, but nonetheless 11 cars arrived at the Castleton Farm Shop for breakfast just before 09:00 on 'Star Wars Day' in reasonably thick fog!
Sadly, the fog and mist remained for much of the route, depriving us of the fabulous scenery that would otherwise be in full view on a sunny day: perhaps we should do a re-run when the sun is shining!
A final recce a few days before the run was going swimmingly well until ascending Glenisla, when it turned out that the road was closed. This road had been driven through a few days before from Glenshee to Kirriemiur without issue, so Roger decided to pass the diversion signs and progress up the Glen to speak with the road gang to see what was going on. Speaking with their foreman, although the road surfaces are good, it turned out they are now progressing back up the Glen to fix curbing and drains. The work will take some time and they are intermittently closing the road.
This led to a decision to re-route as there was no guarantee that the road would be open on the day!
The re-route took us down towards Alyth from the Glens, and then onto Blairgowrie, turning up the A93 to Ballater. After Castleton Farm shop, there were two further rest/refreshment stops about one hour apart, firstly at Peel Farm Shop, east of Kirrie, then the Glenshee Ski Centre.
After lunch, we all went our separate ways with some members heading into Ballater for a little shopping.
All in all, it was a cracking run so thanks Roger and Margaret for organising and thanks to all members who turned out for this fairly short notice run on a bank holiday weekend!
