RW Thomson Rally – June 30th

9 Club members made their way to Mineralwell Park Stonehaven on Sunday 30th June to take part in the R W Thomson Memorial Rally. For reasons unknown, we were located on a hill overlooking the field rather than being in the 'thick of it'.

The RW Thomson Memorial Rally was first held in 1967 to honour R.W. Thomson (1822-73) the inventor of the pneumatic tyre in 1845 (UK Patent 10990) as well as the refillable fountain pen. The rally has been organised since 1976 by the Robert William Thomson Memorial Fellowship which was formed to perpetuate his memory in 1975.

This year the event was bigger than ever with more entries and visitors in attendance on what turned out to be a pleasant day. A rough count showed around 450 vehicles present! A short road run around Stonehaven broke the day up and there were plenty of other attractions to keep everyone entertained.

Commiserations to club member Phil Kenyon who had originally entered his MG Midget but ran into a problem on the way when he filled it up. The petrol was coming out of the tank almost as fast as it was going in! He took it straight home and put suitable containers underneath to catch the leak and eventually arrived at the event in his MG TF.
