Following a 2-year hiatus due to Covid, Aberdeen MG Owners Club returned to the stunning Drum Castle south lawn for a record-breaking Annual Show on 7th August.
Persistent drizzle on the Saturday didn’t bode well for the Sunday, but the day dawned with bright sunshine and developed into a scorching hot summer’s day – in some ways, it was too hot – and many were thankful for the fabulous MG baseball caps handed out by our generous event sponsors Gillanders MG of Aberdeen!
60 cars had pre-registered for the event but as always, we allowed entries on the day and in the end some 68 MGs entered the show – beating our previous record by 4! Add to that the 2 modern MGs brought along by Gillanders together with the Gillanders sponsored Scottish Air Ambulance MG and the end result was a stunning 71 cars present on the lawn.
One surprise guest was Bill Barron who was passing in his magnificent Type 35 Bugatti and kindly parked in front of the Castle for a couple of hours for a rare photo opportunity.
As well as viewing the cars and soaking up the sunshine, the crowd were entertained by local band ‘Nae Cash’ who performed a number of sets and really captured the mood of the day with some fantastic music.
As with all events like this, a lot of people put in a lot of effort to make it the success it was and at risk of forgetting somebody, the following deserve a special mention:
National Trust for Scotland – for providing a fabulous venue for us as well as and teas / coffees / soft drinks etc. Lockdown was particularly difficult for NTS and they are now struggling to attract volunteers, so this was all achieved with minimal staffing.
Gillanders MG of Aberdeen – Our enthusiastic sponsors who have recently opened a showroom at Ker-An House, Wellington Circle, Aberdeen, AB12 3JG, Tel: 01224 394777 for all your modern MG needs. They brought 2 new MG demonstrators along as well as handing out various bits of MG merchandise to the crowd.
John Young of John Young Signs who supplied the fabulous themed awards for the event. John produces all kinds of signage and associated printed items – many of which you will see in your daily life! John can be found at https://www.johnyoungsigns.com/.
Team Aberdeen University – TAU is a group of undergraduate engineers of various disciplines at the University of Aberdeen. The team’s goal each year is to design and build a single seat race car to compete at Silverstone in the IMechE Formula Student competition. TAU have supported us for many years and this year they brought along the latest car for people to see close up. https://www.tauracing.com/
The Deesidedly Tasty Company - a mobile events catering firm based in Banchory, Aberdeenshire who kept us all fed throughout the day.

Scottish Charity Air Ambulance – the SCAA responds, on average, to two time-critical emergency call outs every single day. They are a national charity and receive no statutory government funding, so rely 100% on donations from the public to fuel our life-saving flights. They very kindly attended with a stand to explain the critical lifesaving work they do. Having had a club visit to the facility at Aberdeen Airport last year, we are keen to support them in any way we can. https://www.scaa.org.uk/
Finally, to all club members and anyone who helped with the various setup days, marshalled on the day and everyone who entered a massive thanks to all from the committee.
See you next year –I’m not sure how we can top this year though, so if you have any suggestions, please let us know!
Please see below a far too brief video clip of local band 'Nae Cash' as well as a photo gallery. Along with my pictures, thanks to the following club members who kindly provided additional photos: John Chessor, Lewis Mackland and Rob Buchan.
